Motorcycle Touring
The motorcycle tours described on this site since 2015 have been specifically motorcycle CAMPING trips. Prior to that the trips involved staying in motels. I've made countless motorcycle trips over the years, well over a hundred, but most of them have been variations of the 17 routes shown on this site. For example, the site shows one trip from Calgary to Toronto in 2017 but I've actually made 4 of those same trips. Each trip shown here includes the Google Map for the route as well as the name of the motel or campsite where I stayed overnight.
Motorcycle camping is ideal for me in that it reduces cost and permits me to keep an eye on my bike at all times. I've had past bad experiences with my bike being vandalized while sleeping over in a motel.
I currently own a 2008 Honda Gold Wing GL1800 that I purchased in 2019 for $13,000 and a 2016 Triumph Bonneville T120 that I purchased new for about $14,000. The Gold Wing is used for day trips in the mountains with my wife as a passenger but the Bonneville is my primary ride for solo motorcycle camping trips in and around Western Canada.
Most of my motorcycle trips since 2015 are with full camping gear to avoid hotels and keep the costs down. Also most of the trips are in the 3-5 day duration range which feels about optimum for me. They are not too long where I start to get fatigued from the long days on the road and each night in a tent but long enough to get a couple of days out of Calgary to see lots of scenery before having to head back home. I often take my 2M handheld with me to try and connect on the local ham radio repeaters each night.
