Calgary to Idaho and Montana Motorcycle Camping Trip

Description:  The main objective of this trip was to do the amazing twisty road (Hwy 12) that snakes along beside the Clearwater river between Lewiston Idaho and Missoula Montana.  The bonus is to do the Road to the Sun again on the way back.  The small campsite at Salmon Lake Montana was a strict "pack out what you pack in" site so no waste facilities at all.

Calgary to Toronto and Return Motorcycle Camping Trip

Total Duration: 12 days

Total Distance Traveled: 6,906 km

Description:  This is a long trip obviously but can be easily done in 5 days going out and 5 days coming back.  You need a couple of days in the Toronto area though to rest up before coming back but there is plenty to see and do there.  The ride along the north side of the great lakes on Hwy 17 through the Canadian shield is something to experience.  The highway is smooth and windy in lots of places and very scenic.  The gas stations are few and far between in some areas so watch your fuel.  The speed limit is set low to 90 km/hr through much of it and there are lots of OPP cops watching for speeders.  I did this same route in 2006 on my 1998 Triumph Sprint for an Iron Butt SaddleSore 2000 certification (2000 miles in 2 days).  The ride out was 3,341 km done in 43.5 hours.

Calgary to New Denver, Castlegar, Salmo, Creston Loop Motorcycle Camping Trip

Total Distance Traveled: 1,616 km

Description: You get to stay at the classic biker campground Toad Rock for 2 nights on this trip and you get to do the fantastic twisty river run between Kaslo and New Denver on Hwy 31A twice.  You also get to do the east side of Kootenay Lake between Creston and Balfour on Hwy 3A twice.  Lots of ferry crossings on this one.

Calgary to Cultus Lake via Vancouver Motorcycle Camping Trip

Total Duration: 4 days

Total Distance Traveled: 2,419 km

Description:  This trip hits my usual favourite roads in BC and is actually two loops.  The ride home on the last day 4 is long but it's done on the Coquihalla (Hwy 5) and the Transcanada (Hwy 1) so you can make good time at the higher speeds.  Camping at Cultus lake was nice with its large mature treed lots by the lake.

Calgary to Sea to Sky Hwy Motorcycle Camping Trip

Description:  This is a trip I've made several times over the years.  It hits my favourite roads in BC including the fabulous Sea to Sky Hwy 99 between Lillooet and Pemberton.  The loop includes going through Vancouver which kind of sucks but if done at the right time of day to avoid rush hour it goes by quickly.

Pacific Coast Highway Motorcycle Trip

Description:  This trip was done with my wife in July 2014.  The route down as far as Morro Bay, CA was primarily along the coastline so the temperatures were comfortable.  I do not recommend taking the return route home up the interior of California and Oregon in July as we did because it was just too swelteringly hot on a bike.

Calgary to Sturgis and Black Hills South Dakota Motorcycle Trip

Description: Although this was not a camping trip, I've included it anyway because of the popularity of the destination, Sturgis South Dakota.  I made this trip with my son in 2012 and we scheduled it to arrive a week before the main Sturgis rally so we wouldn't have to contend with the crowds and traffic.  The main objective of this trip was to tour through the famous Black Hills of South Dakota.

Description: Although this was not a camping trip, I've included it anyway because of the popularity of the destination, Sturgis South Dakota.  I made this trip with my son in 2012 and we scheduled it to arrive a week before the main Sturgis rally so we wouldn't have to contend with the crowds and traffic.  The main objective of this trip was to tour through the famous Black Hills of South Dakota.  This is the first trip I did on my new 2011 Triumph Sprint GT.

Beartooth Pass Motorcycle Trip

Total Duration: 7 days

Total Distance Traveled: 3,813 km

Description:  I took this trip with my son in 2010.  The main objective of the trip was to ride the famous Devil's Tail road in Oregon and then hit the equally famous Beartooth Pass in Yellowstone Park in Wyoming on the way back.  A bonus was finding out that Hwy 129 south from Lewiston Idaho down into Enterprise Oregon was an absolutely fantastic ride.  It was fast and twisty with great views down into the canyon below.  Other highlights of the trip were the always impressive Road to the Sun between St. Mary and Columbia Falls Montana and Hwy 12 from Missoula MT to Lewiston ID with its long windy road alongside the Lochsa and Clearwater rivers.
