Warren Shockey Bio

Warren Shockey

My name is Warren Shockey and this is my Bio. I’m a retired IT project manager (since January 2011) living near Sundre, Alberta, Canada. As you can see from this site, my primary interests now are amateur radio (callsign VE6WMS), hiking in the Rocky Mountains near where I live, motorcycle touring and just enjoying the general outdoors on the acreage.  I have two great sons, two wonderful daughter-in-laws and three beautiful grand-daughters.

I grew up in Saskatchewan, the son of a CNR station agent, so we moved around a lot when I was a kid but I had a great time going to school in small towns, traveling and growing up with my parents, playing hockey and just generally having fun. I went to the University in Saskatoon, graduating with a B.Sc. in Physics of all things but that too, was fun. It was in Saskatoon that I met and later married the love of my life, Lenora, and we moved to Edmonton where we spent the most of our working years. In 2004 my company transferred me to Calgary.  I retired in Jan 2011 but continued to do contract work until 2014.

Family

Family is first priority so it can’t go without a mention on my website. I was with my wonderful beautiful wife Lenora for 50 years until she passed away in 2022.  I have two sons living in Edmonton. We’ve also been blessed with three wonderful grand-daughters. Especially now in retirement I try to enjoy the simpler things in life, visits with family, friends, walks in nature, good food, wine, hiking and motorcycle touring.

Career/Work

Phastware Logo Phastware Consulting is the company I created primarily to do contract work after retiring but also to develop my own custom software solutions for the pipeline industry as well. The skills learned in developing the Phastware pipeline simulation tools (www.phastware.com) can now be applied to applications in other areas. The specific development tools I’m most familiar with are: Ruby on Rails, Javascript, CSS, HTML, SQL, JQuery, Ajax as well as content management systems such as Drupal and WordPress. (Jan 2011 - Current)
Divis Logo I have been working with divis since April 2014. divis is a world leader in advanced optimization technology using evolutionary computation methods. It has a proven track record of solving complex non-linear optimization problems for businesses in numerous commercial applications including the oil and gas pipeline industry. The company is based in Dortmund Germany and I am responsible for divis business development in Canada. (Apr 2014 - Current)
Brookfield Residential Logo My second contract was with Brookfield Residential in Calgary from February to October 2013 and again in May/June 2014 as IT project manager for their new Lot Management System. It was a custom website development project to deliver a system primarily for home builders to purchase lots for the development of communities in Calgary and Edmonton. The software development team was from Luxoft based out of Russia and the Ukraine. (Feb 2013 - Oct 2013)
Access Pipeline Logo My first contract as an IT consultant after retiring from Enbridge was with Access Pipeline in Calgary from March to October 2012 as IT project manager to deliver a time entry system for Access employees to record time spent on operational and capital projects. It was implemented using the Replicon time entry system. (Mar 2012 - Oct 2012)
Enbridge Logo I spent most of my career (32 years) with Enbridge Pipelines working in the IT department, initially as a programmer and then moving on to project management and supervisory roles in the latter half of my career. When I look back at my history with Enbridge I can say that overall, it was a generally satisfying and rewarding career. My areas of expertise were Pipeline Hydraulics, Simulation, Modelling and Optimization, Pipeline Scheduling and Operations, Project Management, Document Management and general IT supervision and administration. I have been retired now since Jan 1st, 2011 and with the hiking, motorcycle touring and traveling, I am thoroughly enjoying my retirement right now so have no interest in working as an employee or contractor. (Jan 1979 - Jan 2011)

Retirement

Amateur Radio (HAM) Station VE6WMS

Yaesu Ham Radio

I’ve had my ham license since I was 15 years old (for over 50 years now) and my original call-sign was VE5WT operating from Allan, Saskatchewan. I was active off and on over the yeras but have been mostly "radio acitve" since January 2020.

Computer Programming

I have also been programming off and on over the years ever since learning how to program at University in the 1970's. My first job was as a computer programmer using Fortran and from there I've used numerous languages such as IBM 370 Assembler, Cobol, Pascal, Prolog, Delphi, C++, Java, SQL, PL/SQL, PHP, Ruby and Javascript. My programming work these days in retirement is really just a personal hobby.

Acreage

Acreage Pic

I now live on a nicely treed 5 acre lot in rural Alberta near Sundre.  It is a high elevation point in the surrounding area which makes it ideal for radio operation.  The acreage has a large shop, barn and two fully serviced RV sites.

Motorcycles

Triumph Bonneville 2016 This 2016 Triumph Bonneville T120 seems to be the best all-round fit for my use which are the regular day runs into the mountains and the occasional extended long distance trip.
Triumph Bonneville 2012 This was my 2012 Triumph Bonneville T100 with Arrow exhaust system, chrome cam cover, chain guard and luggage rack.
Triumph Sprint GT 2011 This was my 2011 Triumph Sprint GT and was the best all-round sport touring bike I’ve ever owned.
Triumph Sprint 1998 This 1998 Triumph Sprint Executive is the bike that I put the most miles on to date.  I had it from 1999 to 2011 and put over 130,000 kms on it mostly riding short weekend trips in and around Western Canada.

Travel

Belize Trip 2011

I did most of my traveling between 2000 and 2020 with my wife Lenora through our timeshare ownership, ocean cruises and many month long stays in Mazatlan during the winter.
