VE6WMS Amateur (Ham) Radio Station

The current VE6WMS station setup consists of an Icom 7300 for HF and an Icom 9700 for VHF/UHF operation.

2024_02 Station

The main HF antenna is a K4KIO Hex beam on one tower that covers all bands including WARC from 20 through 6 meters and is up at about 45 ft.  I also have two inverted vees mounted on one of the towers, one for 40 meters and one for 80 meters, both at about 40 ft at the apex.

The VHF/UHF antennas are on a separate tower up at about 45 ft and are:

  • A 13 element Cushcraft A13B2 for 2 meters
  • A 19 element Cushcraft A719B for 70 cm
  • A 16 element Comet 6YA-1216E for 23 cm

There is also an Icom ID-5100 in the shack that uses a Comet GP3 antenna on a push-up mast up about 35 ft.

I recently got into DMR operation with a TYT MD-UV390 HT with a pi-star Hotspot.

I've been a Ham since 1968 but have been active only off and on over the years.  Most recently active since Jan 2020.  I'm a member of the Calgary Amateur Radio Association (CARA).  I've recently as of January 2023 moved from Calgary to an acreage about 10 kms east of Sundre, AB, Canada.

My interests currently are mainly in digital modes such as FT8 and JS8 and also using Echolink to communicate with my Dad who is also a Ham up in Grande Prairie Alberta.  I try to keep my station fully Winlink capable on both HF and VHF for potential service in an emergency situation.
